At certain times of the year it is possible to collect wild Moths for use as livefood for Captive Amphibians. Here's a quick guide on how to create a simple but effective Moth Trap; please note that this trap is designed for use in good weather only and should not be left unattended, always use an RCD when plugging in the light.
To create your trap you will need the following things: a large cardboard box, egg cartons, parcel tape, a clamp lamp and bulb.

First step is to fold a pair of flaps inside the box.

Next fill your box with lose egg cartons, these cartons will give the moths a place to rest once trapped, you can simply remove the cartons one at a time without disturbing the other moths.

Now fold the second pair of flaps inwards to create a \ / shape, this will funnel any captured moths into the box and prevent them from escaping. You may wish to tape the flaps into place if they will not hold themselves.

Clamp your lamp holder to the side of the box with the bulb positioned over the slot, you do not need a fancy Mercury Vapor lamp, a standard 40 or 60 watt bulb will do fine.

Place your box outside after dark, the light from the bulb will attract moths which will then fall into the box for you to collect later. Positioning the box along a hedge row or near trees may provide a greater number of moths.

On a good night it is possible to collect a large number of moths of all shapes and sizes in just a couple of hours.
